It's a practice run, and that's the point

Most people have never been photographed properly. The first time a camera is pointed at you shouldn't be twenty minutes after you got married, with a hundred guests waiting and the light going.

An engagement session gets that first time out of the way when nothing is at stake. You find out what it's like to be around me, I find out how you two are with each other — who makes who laugh, who gets self-conscious, whether you want direction or want leaving alone. By the wedding we're not strangers, and it shows in the photos.

That's why it's $250 rather than $350 if you've booked me for your wedding. It genuinely makes your wedding photos better, so I'd rather you took it than not — but it's an option, never a requirement.

What happens

We pick somewhere with a reason — where you met, where you got engaged, your street, your kitchen. Somewhere generic photographs generically.
You wear what you'd actually wear. Not a costume. If you're uncomfortable it shows up in every frame.
We walk and talk. I'll give you something to do rather than a pose to hold, and then get out of the way.
An hour or so is plenty. Long enough to relax into it, short enough that it stays fun.

Where

Anywhere in and around Winnipeg. Places I keep coming back to: the St. Boniface Cathedral ruins, the riverbank across from it with the Esplanade Riel behind you, the Legislative Building grounds, Assiniboine Park. But the best sessions are usually somewhere I've never shot, because it means something to the two of you.

Winter is underrated

People assume they need summer. Snow against warm stone, bare trees opening up sightlines, nobody else around, and light that stays soft all afternoon — winter sessions are some of my favourites. Bring a coat you like being seen in.
